INSTALLATION NOTES
==================
This file provides important installation information. It is divided
into the following major sections:
1. Hardware Requirements
2. Software Requirements
3. DOS Installation
4. Windows Installation
5. Macintosh Installation
6. Unix Installation
7. Network Installation
8. Existing Applications
9. Copyright Notices
1. Hardware Requirements
========================
This is a Foxpro application. An IBM personal computer (80386 or better)
is recommended. For better performance, it is highly recommended that you
obtain eight megabytes of extended memory. A color monitor and a mouse are
also recommended.
2. Software Requirements
========================
Have the Foxpro runtime unit installed BEFORE installing this application.
3. DOS Installation
===================
To install this application, simply type the following DOS commands:
a: [Enter]
INSTALL [Enter]
...where "a:" is the drive containing the installation diskette. You
will be prompted for the application directory as well as other information.
Note: You must use DOS 3.3 or later. For proper installation, the DOS
programs ATTRIB.EXE and XCOPY.EXE must be within your PATH= statement.
4. Windows Installation
=======================
Install this application from the DOS command line. Installing your Foxpro
for windows runtime unit will create an icon. Modify the properties of this
icon as in the following example:
Command Line : c:\foxrunw\foxrw.exe -t -cc:\foxrunw\config.fpw job
Working Directory: d:\bills\job\
...where "c:\foxrunw" is the runtime unit directory, "job" is the startup
application name, and "d:\bills\job\" is the application directory.
Video mode Note: At a very high resolution, 1024x768 in 256 colors
for example, screens may become so big that Foxpro for windows version 2.x
cannot store them and may shut down. If this ever happens, try reducing
your resolution.
5. Macintosh Installation
=========================
This application is compatible with Foxpro for the Macintosh. On the
installation disk is a file called "FOXPRO.ZIP". Find this file and file
exchange it to the Macintosh. Create a folder for this application. Find
and use a utility that can unzip this Pkware ZIP v2.04g file.
UnZipping Note: "CDX", "DBF", and "FPT" files should NOT have Linefeeds.
5.1 Foxpro for Macintosh
========================
When you start Foxpro, perform the following commands:
set default to d:\bills\job\
do job
...where "d:\bills\job\" is the application folder and "job" is the startup
application name.
5.2 Foxpro for Macintosh Runtime
================================
If you have the Foxpro runtime unit, called FOXMAC??.ESL, put a copy into
your resource folder (where your CONFIG.FPM is located). Do not use an
alias. Add the following lines to your CONFIG.FPM:
path = ::bills:job:
default = ::bills:job:
command = job
Now when you double-click the runtime icon, your CONFIG.FPM will execute your
application.
6. Unix Installation
====================
This application is compatible with Foxpro for Unix. On the installation
disk is a file called "FOXPRO.ZIP". Find this file and perform a doscp
copy to Unix. Create a directory for this application. Find and use a
utility that can unzip this Pkware ZIP v2.04g file.
UnZipping Note: You do not need to remove carriage returns from text files.
Have Foxpro installed and within your PATH. To run your application, perform
the Unix following commands:
cd /bills/job/
fox -c/bills/job/config.fpu job
...where "/bills/job/" is the application directory and "job" is the startup
application name.
7. Network Installation
=======================
For a network, install the runtime unit on the server. During installation,
create a resource directory for each workstation. Each resource directory
will contain it's own separate startup batch file.
To reduce network traffic, you could install the Foxpro runtime unit on each
workstation's local hard drive. Having the resource directory on the local
hard drive will also reduce network traffic. You will need, however, to
re-install this application from each workstation to specify these new
directory locations.
Note: On older networks, there is a tendency not to use any memory manager
at all. This may result in all network drivers loading into conventional
memory, leaving nothing for Foxpro. If starting Foxpro locks up your
workstation, ask network support to look at the possibily of increasing
conventional memory.
8. Existing Applications
========================
When you install over an existing application, existing data files will
be maintained. Remember, however, that installing in a new application
directory will create new (and empty) data files.
Note: It is a always good idea to create a backup of any existing data
before installing an application.
